Mental Health First Aid Training From Scotland’s Leading First Aid Provider

Businesses have become more aware of the importance of positive mental health for staff wellbeing and productivity, and the demand for mental health education and awareness in the workplace continues to grow. Mental health first aid is just as important as physical first aid, and our range of mental health first aid courses teaches the skills to spot the signs of mental health issues, and to confidently respond if a colleague needs support.

Whether you plan to appoint a certified Mental Health First Aider, raise general mental health awareness across your business, or learn how leadership can support their team, our courses will cover what you need. We deliver comprehensive mental health first aid training for businesses at our dedicated training centres across Scotland, or on-site at your own premises.

What Is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid teaches people to recognise the signs of mental ill health and to provide initial, practical support. This could include being able to spot the signs of different mental health conditions (such as depression and anxiety), understanding how to start a conversation with a colleague who appears to be struggling, and directing them to suitable professional help.

Why Is Mental Health First Aid Important?

Although it is not a legal requirement to have certified mental health first aiders in the workplace, there are very clear benefits for both businesses and employees. Mental health issues are one of the most common reasons for staff absence in the UK, with billions lost due to sickness. A business that takes steps to protect its staff’s mental health and wellbeing is contributing to a positive and healthy workplace culture, while supporting its own productivity.

Why us

Why Train With St Andrew’s First Aid

The mental health first aid training we deliver draws on 140 years of experience, dating back to our foundation in 1882. As Scotland’s designated first aid charity we are one of only three official Voluntary Aid Societies in the UK, alongside the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance, and together we co-author the official UK First Aid Manual.

Each year, we train around 20,000 people at our training centres in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and other locations across Scotland. As a charity, course fees do more than fund your certificate, they also support community first aid initiatives, delivered by our incredible volunteers, who contribute over 50,000 hours each year.

What Learners Have Said

Mental Health First Aid course held by Kenny Fulton at Holiday Inn Hamilton was excellent. He delivered some heavy subject material in an open and friendly manner with regular group conversations. Kenny signposted members of the team to further assistance where appropriate. Excellent course.
James Robertson, Trustpilot review
Kenny made the mental health course very enjoyable and easy to learn. Having more discussions rather than reading a lot was much more informative. Thank you
Lyndsay Canning, Trustpilot review
Trainer was fantastic, kept us all engaged and made the learning experience a lot easier

FAQs

What You Need to Know About Mental Health First Aid Courses

While there is no legally required number of mental health first aiders, it is recommended that organisations aim for a similar number of mental health first aiders as physical first aiders.

To become a certified Mental Health First Aider, the two-day course is the right option. If you are looking to raise general awareness across a team or create mental health champions, the 1-day course may be better suited, meanwhile the half-day refresher is for existing certificate holders to refresh their skills on an annual basis.

Yes, we offer on-site mental health first aid training across Scotland. This can be particularly beneficial as training can be tailored to your own environment and priorities. Get in touch with our team to discuss on-site training.
