Annual first aid top-up training from Scotland’s leading first aid provider
This three-hour course gives current workplace first aiders the opportunity to practise and update their skills, keeping them confident and competent throughout their three-year certification period. Employers are legally required to ensure their first aiders are competent and maintain their skills throughout the three years in which their certificates are valid and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) strongly recommends that first aiders complete annual refresher training during any three-year certification period and this course meets that recommendation.
Who is the course for?
This course is only available to candidates holding a current, valid First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate. If your certificate has expired or is due to expire, our First Aid at Work Requalification course is more suitable.
What the course covers
By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:
- Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.
- Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is unconscious (including seizure).
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an adult, including using an AED.
- Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is wounded and bleeding.
- Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is suffering from shock.
Assessment and certification
Candidates are assessed throughout the course, with evidence of underpinning knowledge required for certification. On completion, successful candidates receive a certificate valid for 1 year.
Why train with St Andrew’s First Aid
Our first aid training draws on 140 years of experience, dating back to our foundation in 1882. We are one of only three official Voluntary Aid Societies in the UK, alongside the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance, and together we co-author the official UK First Aid Manual. Each year, we train around 20,000 people at training centres in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and other locations across Scotland. As a charity, course fees do more than fund your certificate. They also support free first aid training for schools and community groups across Scotland, delivered by our volunteers, who contribute over 50,000 hours each year.
Annual first aid update FAQs
What is the First Aid Annual Update?
The Annual Update is a 3-hour top-up course for current FAW or EFAW certificate holders, recommended by the HSE to keep first aid skills sharp during the three-year certification period. It is not a requalification course and doesn’t reset or extend your three-year certificate.
Does this course extend my first aid certificate?
No. The Annual Update does not extend your three-year FAW or EFAW certificate. It provides a one-year top-up certificate confirming you have completed annual refresher training, as recommended by the HSE. You will still need to requalify before your main certificate expires.
How long does the course take?
The course takes three hours, typically running from 1pm to 4pm at our training centres across Scotland. We may also be able to offer training on your premises. Get in touch with our team to discuss your options.
