This refresher course provides workplace first aiders with an opportunity to practice and update their skills as a qualified first aider.

Employers are legally required to ensure their first aiders are competent and maintain their skills throughout the three years in which their certificates are valid.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also strongly recommends that first aiders undertake annual refresher training during any three year certification period. This training is only available to candidates holding current and valid First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work certificates.

On completion of training, successful candidates will be able to:

• Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.
• Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is unconscious (including seizure).
• Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an adult, including using an AED.
• Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is wounded and bleeding.
• Administer first aid to an adult casualty who is suffering from shock.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed throughout the course. Evidence of underpinning knowledge will be required for certification.
