Volunteer Opportunities for Students & Young People in Scotland
Investing In Your Future
If you are a student in Scotland, you know that the “world of work” can feel closer every day. While degrees are important, employers are increasingly looking for something more, proof that you can handle real-world situations with maturity and confidence. Joining St Andrew’s First Aid as a young person isn’t just about giving back; it is an investment in your future self and a great asset when venturing into the world of work.
University and college teach you the theory, but volunteering gives you experiences that most people won’t have. When you join our local teams, you move beyond the classroom and into a role that demands reliability and presence. To a future employer, a history of volunteering with a respected national charity is a clear signal that you are a responsible individual who can manage their time and commit to a cause. It’s about building a reputation for being someone who shows up and makes a difference.

Skills That Strengthen Your CV
You don’t need another online certificate to stand out; you need the “soft skills” that only come from working on the ground.
Confidence Under Pressure
There is no better place to test your mettle than at a busy music festival or a sports match. You will learn to keep a cool head in an environment that is fast-moving and unpredictable. Knowing you have the skills to help, and the team to back you up, builds a level of self-assurance that carries over into every job interview you’ll ever have.
Communication & Teamwork
As a first aid volunteer, you are a public-facing representative of our charity. You will talk to people from all walks of life, often when they are feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed. Mastering the art of calm, clear communication while working with a diverse team of fellow volunteers is exactly what recruiters mean by “excellent interpersonal skills”.
Responsibility You’re Supported With
We give you a trusted role within the community, but we don’t leave you to figure things out alone. You’ll work within clear boundaries with guidance from experienced mentors. This balance allows you to demonstrate real responsibility on your CV while knowing you have a safety net at every event.
Volunteering That Fits Around Study
We know that your first priority is your education. That’s why our volunteer opportunities for students are designed to be entirely modular and flexible.
Flexible Shifts
You are the boss of your own schedule. You pick the shifts that work for you. If you have a heavy week of lectures or a looming dissertation deadline, you simply don’t sign up for events that week. We make sure volunteering fits around your exam periods.
No Long-Term Lock-Ins
Life as a student changes fast. Whether you are heading home for the summer or taking on a part-time job, you can scale your volunteering hours up or down to suit your life. While we value the time you can give, our ambition is for volunteers to contribute around 60 hours per year, roughly five hours a month, to keep their skills sharp.
First Aid as a Life Skill
You don’t have to be a medical student to be a brilliant first aid volunteer. In fact, most of our volunteers come from non-medical backgrounds. The skills you learn with St Andrew’s First Aid are life skills that remain useful long after you’ve graduated. Whether you are at home, in the office, or out with friends, you will be the person who knows what to do in an emergency.
