How to Become a St Andrew’s First Aid Volunteer

Starting something new is always a bit daunting, especially when it involves learning skills like first aid. If you’ve been searching for how to become a volunteer but feel held back by a lack of experience, you are in the right place. At St Andrew’s First Aid, we don’t expect you to be an expert, we just need you to be someone who wants to help their community.

It is perfectly normal to feel a flicker of nerves when thinking about first aid. Many of our most dedicated volunteers initially thought, “I’m not sure I could handle an emergency,” or “I don’t have a medical brain.” We want to reassure you: no medical qualifications or prior experience are expected. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite for joining; it is something we help you build. Whether you are searching volunteering near me to meet new people or to give back to your town, you will find a supportive community ready to help you find your feet. We provide the uniform, the training, and the team, you simply provide your willingness to help.

Here is exactly what happens when you take that first step. Starting is simple.. Just fill in our volunteer application form and we’ll walk you through the process.

Informal Chat

The process starts with a simple, friendly conversation. This isn’t a high-pressure interview or a test of your knowledge. It’s an opportunity for you to ask us anything. We want to make sure our local team is a great fit for your life and your goals.

Guided Training (Plain English, Practical Skills)

Once you join, you’ll learn first aid and volunteering essentials through our guided training. We strip away the complicated first aid jargon and focus on practical, life-saving skills. Our trainers are experts at making everyone feel welcome, ensuring the learning environment is supportive, relaxed, and even fun.

The Shadowing Phase

You will never be “thrown in at the deep end.” Before you take on any responsibility, you’ll enter a shadowing phase. You’ll be paired with experienced team members who will show you the ropes, answer your questions, and ensure you feel comfortable in the event environment.

Your First Event

When you are ready for your first “official” event, you’ll do it as part of a team. You will have a clear, defined role and constant access to a Lead Volunteer. If you ever feel unsure, there is always someone standing right next to you who knows exactly what to do.

Our “Training + Team” formula is designed to remove any weight of responsibility from your shoulders while you are still learning. By combining high-quality training with a team structure, we ensure that both you and the public are safe.

The deal is simple: You give your time, and we give you support. You are an essential part of the St Andrew’s First Aid team, and we make sure you have the tools and the people around you to succeed.

Ongoing Learning and Support

Becoming a volunteer isn’t a one-time event. Your skills will naturally sharpen over time. We provide regular refreshers and ongoing guidance to keep your knowledge fresh and your confidence high. As you attend more events, from local gala days to major stadium concerts, you’ll find that the environment which may have once felt intimidating becomes second nature.

Confidence Grows Through Experience

There is no better way to build self-belief than by being there for someone in their moment of need. As you practice your skills in real-life, supported settings, you’ll realise just how much of an impact you are making. You’ll grow not just as a volunteer, and become more confident in situations that might arise in your community where you can help.
