First Aider – Who To Choose

How to choose the right person to be a first aider

It is important that employers think carefully about the type of person they ask to become a first aider within the workplace. Here are some important points to consider before making your choice:

Will they be able to cope in an emergency in a calm and confident manner?

Will they be able to make themselves easily available should an emergency occur?

Are they physically able to undertake the duties expected of a first aider? Can they kneel on the floor and carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)?

Are they able to absorb and retain new knowledge and skills in a short period of time?

Are they regularly in the office? Will they be available during all business operating hours?

Remember to also plan for back-up first aiders to provide cover when your nominated first aiders are on annual leave or sick leave. You can find further information on needs assessment here.
