Moving & Handling courses

Principles

This 4 hour course provides an insight into the risks associated with moving and handling and teaches safer lifting and carrying techniques.

Course content includes:

  • The law relating to Manual Handling, associated roles and responsibilities and relevant Health & Safety information
  • Spinal anatomy, relevant structure and function
  • Causes of back pain and other handling related injuries
  • Risk assessment
  • Safer lifting techniques and team handling 

People

This 4 hour course deals specifically with the handling of people and is relevant to healthcare workers and providers. It follows a minimal handling/lifting policy and includes guidance on handling aids.

Course content includes:

  • Risk assessment
  • Principles of handling people in a care environment
  • Assisting mobility
  • Assisting people in chairs
  • Assisting people in bed
  • The use of handling aids

Casualties

This one-day course is recommended for anyone who needs to move or handle casualties. It examines the potential handling risks in an emergency situation and demonstrates safer lifting techniques.

Course content includes:

  • Risk assessment
  • Applying moving and handling principles to dealing with casualties
  • Use of carry chairs, carry sheet, Furley (folding) stretcher, orthopaedic (scoop) stretcher, ambulance trolley and transporting people in wheelchairs

Certification

The certificate for successful completion of any of the above courses is valid for three years
