HSE Approved 'First Aid at Work' (FAW)
On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:
- provide emergency first aid at work;
- administer first aid to a casualty with:
- injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries - chest injuries - burns and scalds - eye injuries - sudden poisoning - anaphylactic shock
- recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes).
This course takes place either one day per week for three weeks (day release) or on four consecutive days within one week (block course). Book a First Aid at Work course
Requalification Course
This two-day requalification course (1 day per week or over two consecutive days) includes revision of all subjects covered in the full course. This course enables your employees to renew their certificate before it expires. Successful candidates are awarded an HSE Approved 'First Aid at Work' certificate which is valid for a further three years. Book a Requalification course
Annual Refresher Course (from 1 August 2010)
A three-hour course available to qualified First Aiders to prevent 'skills fade' during the 3 year lifespan of their FAW certificate.
Candidates should demonstrate their competence to:
- assess the situation in an emergency
- administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
- administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
- administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
(from 1 October 2009)
On completion of this one-day course, successful candidates should be able to:
- understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
- the importance of preventing cross infection - the need for recording incidents and actions - use of available equipment
- assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
- administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
- administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
- administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
- provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
