St. Andrew's First Aiders help to bring Hamilton Accies player "back from the dead"
9 September 2006
After suffering a misplaced tackle during their match against Clyde, 18 year-old Hamilton defender Ross McCabe was in real danger of losing his life - had it not been for the quick actions of St. Andrew's volunteer First Aiders and medical staff at the ground.

Approximately 80 minutes into the game
the First Aiders were signaled by the referee to enter the field of play to attend the injured Hamilton player who had suffered a kick to the throat and mouth area. On arrival, Duty Officer David Lockhart found that the player was not breathing properly and was in trouble.
David said of the incident :
“ I called for the defibrillator and started chest compressions immediately. Stephen Allen, our A.E.D. Operator, arrived and started up the defib while Jane McDowell called for the ambulance. The defib showed that there was an abnormal heart rhythm. One shock was given by Stephen and a normal rhythm was shown on the indicator. After a few seconds the player then started to breath and showed signs of recovery.

He was still only semi conscious when the ambulance arrived and the Paramedics transferred him into the ambulance. They then gave him oxygen and took him to Wishaw Hospital where we were glad to hear later he had made a good recovery and was sitting up talking to the press."
"Both sets of supporters gave us all a rapturous applause as we left the field."
First Aiders on duty were David Lockhart, Jane McDowell, Stephen Allen and Hellen Bell.
Naturally we at St. Andrew's are all delighted that our volunteers were able to assist Ross and we hope to see him make a full recovery.
